Answer

Discovery Search (also called EDS for EBSCO Discovery Service) is a tool that allows you to access the majority of the Library's resources using a single search. This includes article databases, e-books, streaming video, images, and records from items in the Library's catalog like books, print journals, scores, CDs, and DVDs.

If you've searched in an EBSCOhost database before, Discovery Search will look very familiar. The basic mechanics of searching in Discovery Search are the same as in any other EBSCOhost database.

Discovery Search includes all EBSCOhost databases that we subscribe to as well as: Alexander Street Press databases, Credo Reference, Naxos Music Library, Gale Databases, GPO, Oxford (Grove) Databases, JSTOR Collections, ARTstor, Lexis/Nexis, ScienceDirect, and our catalog holdings for items in our local collection.

Discovery Search also includes widgets in the right column for the Digital Public Library of America, Kanopy (a streaming video service), and an Ask a Librarian chat service.

At this time, the following databases are not included in Discovery Search:

  • AnthroSource
  • Biological Abstracts
  • MathSciNet
  • ProQuest Databases (ABI/Inform, ARTbibliographies Modern, Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, Design and Applied Arts Index, Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive, International Bibliography of Art, Research Library)
  • ProQuest Historical Newspapers
  • WorldCat

Discovery Search also includes research starters that provide topic overviews, links to full text resources, and direct links into specific partner databases (e.g., Opposing Viewpoints, ACLS Humanities E-Books, Gale, Project Muse, JSTOR, etc.). For help using Discovery Search, or any of our library's resources, Ask a Librarian.

This service is staffed by librarians from New York State, as well as other parts of the country. You will not necessarily be chatting with a librarian from Purchase College. Use the widget above, or this form, to ask a question.
