The Music Collection, located through the glass doors on the first floor of the Library, houses the Library's CDs, LP (vinyl) records, and music scores.

What's in the Music Collection:

  • Scores with call numbers M7-M5000 are shelved in the Music Collection.
  • The Library's LP (vinyl) collection
  • The Library's CD collection
  • Over 4,000 CDs donated to Purchase College Library by David Byrne of Talking Heads fame.
  • See the Music Collection Stacks Map for more info.

  • NOTE: Music books with call numbers M1-M6 and ML-MT (i.e.: composers' collected works, music theory, technique, ethnomusicology, etc.) are shelved in the Main Stacks on the lower level.

How to find specific resources in the Music Collection:

To search for a particular CD or score, search for the title, musician, or composer in the library catalog.

You can limit your results to CDs by using the options in the lefthand column of the catalog. Keep in mind, if you limit to CDs only, you won't be able to see any LPs or sheet music in your results, just CDs.

To search specifically for an LP, see the FAQ on finding vinyl recrods.

Listening Stations in the Music Collection:

The Music Collection room also contains listening stations with turntables that play vinyl records or CDs. Please use headphones at all times.  Headphones can be checked out at the Circulation Desk.

More listening and viewing rooms are available in the Media Resources Center. Ask at the Circulation Desk for access to a listening room.

Remember, the Music Collection is a Quiet Study Zone, so please be mindful of your peers when you use this room and always use headphones at a moderate/reasonable volume when listening to music.
